Chapter 02 · The making loop

Inside the Dressmaker game

A workshop for making the dress, piece by piece.

Dressmaker is a single-player crafting simulation by Cozy Lives, published by Free Lives. Its store description puts the construction of a dress at the centre of play.

Fabric and the cut

Each garment panel can use its own fabric. How you arrange a pattern on the material becomes part of the finished dress: the Steam description specifically distinguishes aligning to the grain from cutting on the bias.

Pause at the cutting table. Look at the pattern’s direction and the fabric before sewing.

At the sewing machine

Feed the fabric through the machine to join it. After sewing, the game supports decorations including buttons, bows, appliqué and lace trims.

Use the in-game tutorial for input bindings. This page describes the published process and doesn’t claim a tested control layout.

A dress for someone

Customers commission dresses for their tastes and occasions. You can also display your own pre-made designs in the shop window for off-the-rack sales.

The developer’s September pre-launch note describes a substantial story campaign alongside off-rack dressmaking. Treat that as the developer’s estimate, rather than a guarantee of how long your playthrough will take.
